TWO WEEKS/TORONTO TO QUEBEC CITY

Prepare for a rollercoaster of urban and rural delights on this 1450km journey across two great provinces that never has you far from a major lake or river. It can be 'done' in 10 days, but add a few more and you'll connect more deeply with this fascinating land and its people.

Book-ended by two of Canada's great cities, this route offers some of Canada's best culture, cuisine and character. Start in tantalizing Toronto, filled with world-class architecture, museums, restaurants, nightclubs and parks. Take a day trip to Niagara Falls, then head east to lovely Quinte's Isle. Catch the ferry to Adolphustown, then retrace history along the Loyalist Parkway into Kingston with its well-preserved town center. Then follow the St Lawrence River northeast to Gananoque. Stop at Upper Canada Village, a recreated 1860s town, before heading to Ottawa. Get your culture fix at the many museums and sample the bustling cafe and nightlife scene before your next stop, Montreal. Be seduced by the city's blend of French joie de vivre, British tradition and North American can-do spirit. There are great sights and even better restaurants to give your stomach a workout. Once you've had your fill, swing over to the Laurentians to hike, cycle or canoe yourself back into shape. End your trip in Quebec City. Its charming old town, walled and dramatically positioned on a bluff, will leave you with sweet memories long after you've returned home.
